The Cornerstone Christian football team welcomed six teams to its home field Friday night to compete in the school’s annual football Jamboree.

Kingwood Christian, Autauga, Hooper, South Montgomery, East Memorial and Taylor Road participated in this year’s jamboree to play a total of seven games.

Chargers’ head coach Tim Smith was excited to get an opportunity to see some of his teams’ opponents in action.

&uot;We saw a lot of good football,&uot; he said. &uot;It worked out really well for us and all the teams.&uot;

The jamboree began at 5:30 and didn’t wrap up until after midnight. Smith said the games, which each consisted of two nine-minute halves, are important for teams looking to make their final preseason preparations.

&uot;It lets the guys know where they are at and what they still need to work on,&uot; he said. &uot;It helps with strength conditioning as well.&uot;

The Chargers didn’t disappoint their coach in the two games they played, defeating South Montgomery in the first game, 20-0, and East Memorial in the second game, 16-0. Smith still believes his team has a lot of kinks to work out.

&uot;We started off a little sluggish on offense,&uot; he said. &uot;We picked up speed as the game went along, but we still have a lot of work to do with our offensive line.&uot;

With no returning starters from last year’s squad on the offensive line, Smith knows the new line will have to mature fast.

&uot;They’ve never played together or started before,&uot; he said.

&uot;I know they’re good athletes, and I’m looking forward to seeing them improve as the year goes along.&uot;

The Chargers’ sophomore running back Austin Vinsant shined during his team’s two games, rushing for 156 yards on six carries for two touchdowns.

&uot;He’s a good one,&uot; Smith said. &uot;We’ve been waiting for him for a long time.&uot;

Kingwood Christian School also got some much-needed game experience during the jamboree.

Lions head coach Jerry Stearns said he thought his players performed well but also said there were a number of kinks that needed to be worked out before the season got under way.

Junior quarterback Andrew Pearce struggled early for Kingwood but found his groove in the second half of the team’s match against South Montgomery.

Pearce connected with wide receiver Adam Irby for the game’s only touchdown, giving the Lions a 7-0 win
