Shelby County commissioners approved only one of three alcohol licenses at its meeting Monday morning.

Starz Karaoke Lounge, located on Highway 280 in north Shelby County, received a lounge retail liquor license. The class I license will allow for both on-premises and off-premises consumption of alcohol.

Robert Stanley Loboda Jr. applied for the license that passed the commission.

A license to sell alcohol on Sundays, however, did not pass the commission failing by a vote of 6-2-1. Commissioners Lindsey Allison and Dan Acker voted for passage of the license, and Commissioner Jon Parker abstained.

Leovigilda Castro applied for the Club Liquor license – Class II, which would allow his business, Zapata’s, to sale alcohol on Sundays.

Zapata’s is located on Highway 280 in north Shelby County. It operates 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sunday.

The denied license would have allowed Zapata’s to act as a corporation organized with at least 100 paid members. The “membership” must hold regular meetings, have officers and collect dues.

An off premises wine and beer sales transfer was denied for Shahinda and Mazhar Siddiqui.

The Siddiqui applied for the transfer for the US Raceway, a convenience store located at 5349 Highway 280 in north Shelby County.

According to the transfer application, Mazhar Siddiqui was convicted of attempting to traffic stolen property in Arizona.

Rick Everroad of the ABC Board said the property was tobacco and alcohol.

He said Siddiqui was arrested in October 1993, paid a fine of $1,000 and was given a year probation.
