Eagles cannot take Thompson likely

The Oak Mountain Eagles are in a precarious situation right now. They’re sitting tied for second place in Class 6A, Region 6 with the Mountain Brook Spartans with two games left against the Thompson Warriors and the defending 6A state champion Hoover Buccaneers.

The Thompson Warriors are trying to prove they are the skilled team that everyone believed them to be at the beginning of the season.

That leaves both teams with a lot to play for when they go head-to-head this Friday night at Heardmont Park.

The Warriors slipped up against Sparkman last week and head coach Jerry Hood said the Warriors 0-5 region record is deceiving.

&8221;They’re going to win a ballgame one of these days,&8220; he said after the Eagles victory against Pelham in week six. &8221;I just hope it’s not against us.&8220;

u Shelby County Game of the Week Prediction: Oak Mountain 24, Thompson 17.

The Chelsea Hornets endured their first loss of the season in week seven against Dora. The Hornets try to bounce back this week against Region 5 opponent Holt. Chelsea’s offense struggled to move the ball against the Bulldogs but you can look for quarterback Coty McLaughlin and and Davin Palmer to light up a struggling Holt defense.

u Prediction: Chelsea 35, Holt 14.

The Calera Eagles are back on their feet this week after defeating Hale County on a field goal, 24-21, in week seven. They travel to Billingsley this week, a team that fell to Vincent last week, 24-8.

u Prediction: Calera 19, Billingsley 6.

The Vincent Yellow jackets are a crucial point in their season as they prepare to face region foe Pickens County (6-1 overall, 5-0 in region 4).

u Prediction: Pickens County 14, Vincent 7.

Montevallo hosts Corner this week after blowing out Holt, 35-0, in week seven. Corner (0-7) is coming off a 59-20 trouncing by Tarrant.

u Prediction: Montevallo 28, Corner 0.

The Shelby County Wildcats notched their first Region win of the season last week with a solid victory over Sylacauga, 26-14.

Both teams are a far cry from the playoffs this season, but count on a close battle between the thirsty squads.

u Prediction: Valley 21, Shelby County 12.

Spain Park hosts Mountain Brook this week following a difficult loss to Vestavia Hills last week, 31-9. The Jags have struggled offensively this year and have little to contend for against a Spartans team that has its sites set on the playoffs.

u Prediction: Mountain Brook 35, Spain Park 13.

The Pelham Panthers face what could be their toughest challenge of the year as they travel to face the Hoover Buccaneers.

This game has alot of playoff implications in Region 6 with Hoover looking to hold on to first place and the Panther’s needing to win one of their two final games to make the post season.

u Prediction: Hoover 24, Pelham 18.

The Briarwood Lions play what is no doubt their biggest game of the year against the unbeaten Homewood Patriots this week. The Lions are coming off an upset win over No. 3 Benjamin Russell in week seven and have their sights set on the top team in Alabama 5A.

u Prediction: Briarwood 28, Homewood 27.

The Kingwood Lions host Taylor Road in their homecoming game after dropping their first game of the season last week to Escambia. Taylor Road has struggled to win games this year and should be no match for the high-powered and angry, Kingwood offense.

u Prediction: Kingwood 42, Taylor Road 0.

Shelby Academy continues its trek through the AISA this week as they travel to face Sumter. The Raiders have beaten five teams this year by scoring more than 40 points in a game. Look for another blowout.

u Prediction: Shelby Academy 35, Sumter 6.

Cornerstone Christian travels to AISA unbeaten powerhouse Southern Academy after defeating East Memorial last week .

u Prediction: Southern 35, Cornerstone 13.

Coosa Valley travels to Evangel.
