The Spain Park Jaguars surprised many by upsetting the Mountain Brook Spartans Friday night in a defensive contest, 7-0.

The Jags’ victory stirred up buzz across Region 6 as Spain Park moved into a three-way tie with Pelham and Vestavia Hills with 2-3 region records.

Hoover and Oak Mountain have both locked up playoff berths while Mountain Brook will have to play their way in Friday night.

The Jags scored the only touchdown of the game following an interception by Spain Park’s Michael Layton.

Jaguar quarterback Cody Wells connected with receiver Justin Diliberto on the ensuing drive for a 38-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter.

Mountain Brook pressured late at the Jags’ 20-yard line but an interception by Spain Park’s Moragn Ogilvie sealed the deal for the Jags.

Spain Park faces Pelham at home this week with a playoff berth on the line for both teams.

The Chelsea Hornets returned to their winning ways Friday night with a 40-6 win over Holt.

Davin Palmer shined for the Hornets, rushing for 101 yards on five carries and two scores.

Holt scored first in the game, but the Hornets used their offensive weapons to notch 40 unanswered points after that. The win kept Chelsea tied atop class 4A, region 5 with Dora. The Hornets face winless Corner this week in their final region game of the season.

Desmond Yowe rushed for 94 yards for the Vincent Yellow Jackets as his team edged Pickens County Friday night, 16-12.

The Yellow Jackets built on a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown by Steven Adams to move their region record to 5-1 and into a tie Pickens County for second place.

The Jackets will face the Calera Eagles at home this week as the Eagles try to lock up the fourth and final playoff spot in Class 2A, Region 4 play
