Morgan Hooper, a 17-year-old senior at Chelsea High School, is Shelby County Reporter Student of the Week.

Chelsea High School Principal Pat Grey selected her for the honor.

According to Grey and guidance counselor Allison Marsh, Morgan was selected because of her active involvement in community service.

&uot;Not only is she an honor student at Chelsea High School, but she strives to make a difference in the life of her community,&uot; Grey said. For example, she has volunteered for After School and Extended Da’ programs, served as the student representative on the Governor’s Council for Community Education for the state of Alabama and worked on a year-long community service project through Shelby County Youth Leadership.

&uot;She deserves to be recognized for her outstanding attitude, efforts and scholastic achievement,&uot; Grey said.

Morgan is the daughter of Mike and Carlene Hooper. She has a 15-year-old sister, Meredith, who is a sophomore at ChHS. And she is the granddaughter of Hazel Reed and Dick and Betty Estes.

Morgan said math is her favorite subject.

&uot;It has a logic. It has a reason. It’s changing but never changes. The problems change so they are exciting and fun, but the concepts don’t.&uot;

He favorite teacher is golf coach Frank Ritchie.

&uot;In his class, it’s not about a number grade. It’s comprehending, understanding, working with students. He’s here at 7:15 every morning. He’s dedicated to his students.&uot;

She said Ritchie teaches her current math class and sponsors the math team and the yearbook.

Morgan was selected Homecoming Queen for 2005. She is also senior class president, in the Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta math honor society.

In addition, she is in the National Honor Society and a lieutenant governor in the Alabama District of Key Club International.

She also serves as business manager for The Chelsea Times school newspaper.

&uot;My passion is student service,&uot; Morgan said. She noted that last year in Shelby County Youth Leadership, she worked with King’s Ranch helping to paint the horse corral.

Morgan said she also likes to go shopping and likes SEC football.

Her parents are her superheroes, she said, &8220;Because of their love and dedication to our family and to each other.&8221;

Morgan plans to attend the University of Alabama

to major in marketing.

&uot;I’m going to own my own marketing firm and become a broadcast journalist,&uot; she said
