A former member of the Calera City Council is suing mayor George Roy for slander.

Tommie Lynn Morrison, who held a seat on the council before losing the 2004 election, filed a four-count complaint against Roy in Shelby County’s Circuit Court.

Morrison said the suit is related to &8220;lies&8221; allegedly spread about her during the city’s last municipal elections.

Seeking both compensatory and punitive damages, the suit claims Morrison was &8220;subjected to disgrace, ridicule and/or contempt,&8221; and that her &8220;reputation was damaged.&8221;

The suit was filed on Morrison’s behalf by Alabaster attorney James V. Green Jr. and alleges the mayor made slanderous and defamatory statements about Morrison during the summer and fall months of 2004, when Calera’s municipal campaigns were in full swing.

The complaint against Roy includes two counts of slander, one count of invasion of privacy and a final count of negligence and wantonness.

Attempts to reach Roy for comment were unsuccessful.

Filed Sept. 23 of this year, the case will be heard by Shelby County Circuit Court Judge J. Michael Joiner in front of a struck jury
