Christopher James Roy, 25, of Calera died in the line of duty on Monday, Nov. 28, 2005.

He was a lifelong resident of Calera, graduating from Calera High School. He began his career as a volunteer firefighter and joined the Calera Fire Department full-time in 2001. He was energetic and fun-loving, cared a lot about the fire department and loved what he did. He loved helping people. Determined to be the best firefighter he could be, he recently completed a course at Alabama Fire College.

He had planned to build a house in Jemison. He was excited about the future, planning his farm which would include some baby goats.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Herman Lee Johnson.

He is survived by his parents, Joyce Johnson Roy and James Richard Roy; his brother, Richard Samuel Roy; his grandparents, Martha and the Rev. Max Jones of Philadelphia, Miss., and Mayor George and Betty Roy of Calera; his aunts, Shirley (Willie) Vaughn of Philadelphia, Miss., Betty Jane Edwards of Orange Beach, Ala., Barbara Sue (Timmy) Franks of Calera, Doris Ann (Wally) Sajpel of Calera and George W. Roy Jr. of Calera; his uncle, Howard (Lynn) Johnson of Crystal Springs, Miss.; and his fianc/, Christine Nesmith.

A full fire department funeral was Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. at Concord Baptist Church, the Revs. Hal Warren and Terry Hill and Fire Chief Tommy Moon presiding. Burial followed in Shelby Memory Gardens, Charter Funeral Home directing.

The family requests memorial donations be made to a fund set up for the Calera Fire Department at Central State Bank in Calera. The funds will be used to purchase a fire truck
