Calera Council members plan to honor the deceased firefighter Christopher Roy by naming the fire station where he worked after him.

The council will name Fire Station number 2 The Christopher J. Roy Building. Roy, 25, died Nov. 28 during a traffic collision as he was responding to a fire call.

Calera Fire Chief Tommy Moon said the department considered naming a new truck after Roy, but he thinks naming the station is a more fitting tribute.

Whereas a new firetruck might last several years, Moon said the building will serve the city indefinitely.

&8220;A truck is only going to last so long,&8221; Moon said. &8220;Hopefully that building will be there from now on.&8221;

Roy helped construct the station and then worked as a full-time firefighter in the same building, which is located on George Roy Parkway.

&8220;I think it’s a fitting honor to Chris, with the amount of work he but in there,&8221; Moon said. &8220;That was his station.&8221;
