Player of the Year

Andy Davis

Briarwood’s Andy Davis is at the top of his class when it comes to football.

Davis has been a force on the field for the Lions during the past four years and will continue on the gridiron at the University of Alabama in 2006.

Standing 6 feet tall at 205 pounds, Davis finished his senior season with 112 solo tackles, three interceptions and a safety.

This is Davis’ second appearance on the Reporter’s All-County Team.

Offensive Player of the Year

Richie Fordham

Junior quarterback Richie Fordham led the Oak Mountain Eagles to the semifinals of the AHSAA 6A playoffs this season. His ability to throw and run the ball helped the Eagles to the best season in the program’s history.

Defensive Player of the Year

Walker Kent

The Chelsea Hornets’ Walker Kent proved to be a big leader for the Hornets this season on both sides of the ball. The senior’s 10 picks provided a spark for a team that made it to the quarterfinals of the 5A playoffs.

Coach of the Year

Jerry Hood

The Eagles’ Jerry Hood led his squad to the school’s best record ever at 10-3 in his second year as Oak Mountain’s head coach. Hood’s aggressive coaching style helped bring the Eagles to the brink of the 6A title game.

2005 All-County Team

Offense

QB – Richie Fordham (Oak Mountain) – Fordham completed 157-of-246 passes for 1,843 yards and 10 scores. He also added 451 rushing yards and nine TDs.

RB – Desmond Yowe (Vincent) – Yowe had 1,269 yards rushing on 205 carries and eight scores for the Jackets. He averaged 6.2 yards a carry.

RB – Adrian Marcus (Thompson) – Marcus rushed for 1,000 yards on 129 carries, averaging 7.8 yards a touch. He finished with 11 touchdowns.

WR – Cody Owens (Kingwood) – Owens had 2,066 all-purpose yards and 19 touchdowns. He also had nine interceptions on defense for the Lions.

WR – Adam Mims (Spain Park) – Mims was the leading reciever for the Jags this season, finishing with 32 catches for 579 yards and five touchdowns.

TE – Deven Onarheim (Thompson) – Onarheim caught 35 passes this season for 489 yards and six touchdowns for the Warriors as a senior.

OL – Robert Drum (Spain Park) – Defensive linemen struggled to get past Drum this season, and anchor of the Jags powerful O-line.

OL – Mark Melichar (Oak Mountain) – A workhorse for the Eagles, Melichar dominated opponents off the line and has signed to play with Mississippi State.

OL – D.J. Looney (Oak Mountain) – Dominating in the trenches, Looney was named to the AHSAA North-South football All Star team as a junior this year.

OL – Ryan Pugh (Spain Park) – A big force on the line, Pugh was named to the AHSAA North-South football All Star team as a junior this year.

OL – Payton Ey (Briarwood) – Ely held his own against oncoming rushers this year and was an effective blocker for the Lions.

K – Ryan Shoemaker (Oak Mountain) – Shoemaker finished 12-of-18 in field goal tries with a long of 48 yards. He also went 38-of-39 on extra points.

Defense

LB – Patrick Foshee (Oak Mountain) – Foshee finished the year with 81 solo tackles, 39 assists, caused two fumbles and recovered one dropped ball.

LB – Brian Fulgham (Montevallo) – Fulgham led the Bulldogs defense in his senior season, finishing the year with 114 solo tackles for Montevallo.

LB – Lakin Spinks (Kingwood) – Spinks led the Lions in tackles this year with 127 solo. He also had five forced fumbles and one interception.

LB – Riley Scruggs (Briarwood) – Scruggs finished with 103 solo tackles for the Lions. He also had an interception, a fumble recovery and two safeties.

DB – Andy Davis (Briarwood) – Davis finished the year with 112 solo tackles, three interceptions and a safety. He will play for Alabama next season.

DB – Walker Kent (Chelsea) – Kent had 12 interceptions while recording 44 solo tackles. He also had 10 catches for 238 yards and three scores.

DB – Trent McKnight (Oak Mountain) – McKnight finished his senior year as an Eagle with 78 solo tackles and 69 assists. He also had three interceptions.

DL – Matt Vick (Shelby County) – Vick finished his career at Shelby County strong this season, notching 76 tackles in nine games this year.

DL – J.D. Lott (Briarwood) – Lott proved to be an anchor on the defensive line for the Lions this year, wreaking havoc on opposing offenses.

DL – Nick Cannady (Calera) – Cannady led the Eagles with 94 tackles this season and also had four sacks and caused two fumbles for Calera.

DL – Chris McNeal (Thompson) – McNeal finished the year with nine sacks and 54 solo tackles at the defensive end position for the Warriors.

P – Ryan Shoemaker (Oak Mountain) – Shoemaker averaged 39.59 yards per punt this season on 46 kicks for the Eagles.
