The Kingwood Christian Lions boy’s basketball team is something to behold.

Now 12-0 on the season after winning their home Christmas tournament, the Lions are leaving little doubt that they are a team to reckoned with in AISA ball.

Senior guard Cody Owens, senior center Adam Irby and junior point guard Andrew Pearce have led Kingwood on a 12-game romp and show little signs of slowing down any time soon.

But the Lions’ winning ways can be credited to more than the play of those players.

Head coach Chris Simpson enjoys dipping deep into his bench, a strategy evident in the Lions’ game against Ashford last week in which six players scored in double digits.

Despite their success, the Lions find themselves ranked only seventh in the AISA standings, a stat that is sure to change in this week’s poll.

The Lions, a team that has struggled in years past, is exploding under the direction of Simpson. In only his second year as Kingwood boys head coach, Simpson understand that his Lions have a long way to go this year.

He will be the first to tell you that they have a lot of things to work on.

Thanks to well-orchestrated teamwork and a few breaks their way, the Kingwood boys are steaming along headed into January’s cramped schedule.

With the majority of their region games still ahead of them, the task at hand grows lighter after each victory.

Following the school’s best-ever football season, the numerous Kingwood players who worked hard on the gridiron and are now grinding it out on the hard court deserve recognition as quality athletes.
