A robbery was recently thwarted at Wal-Mart in Pelham.

Pelham Police Lt. Scott Tucker said the incident occurred after 6 p.m. on Dec. 19.

He said an individual went to the electronics department at the store located on Highway 31 and concealed an item under his coat.

He said Wal-Mart loss prevention personnel confronted Freddie Wright Grant, 46, of the Birmingham area, after he passed all possible points of payment.

Tucker said a scuffle ensued during which the individual claimed to have a gun.

Once at the police station, Tucker said the identification the individual had proved false.

He said the individual was charged with first-degree robbery based on his statement he had a gun.

Tucker said Grant was taken to the Shelby County Jail and charged on Dec. 20
