Chelsea’s Joe Wells was a little nervous before Tuesday night’s non-region game against Fultondale.

But it wasn’t the pressure of trying to earn his sixth-straight double-double that had the senior center on edge. Instead, it was who was watching from the stands.

Wells only started playing for the Hornets basketball team at the end of December, but his outstanding play is already catching the eye of college head coaches across Alabama, including Jacksonville State men’s basketball coach Mike LaPlante.

The Hornets’ star only scored two points in the first half against Fultondale, but erupted in the second half and finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five blocked shots as Chelsea defeated Fultondale, 49-38.

&uot;He’s played well for us in every game,&uot; Chelsea head coach Wade Waldrop said. &uot;He’s been working hard since coming to us, and I think he deserves the credit he’s getting.&uot;

Chelsea’s Davin Palmer lead the squad in scoring with 17 points and finished with seven steals.

Despite the victory, Waldrop said his team struggled early.

&uot;I didnt think we handle the ball very well to start off with,&uot; he said. &uot;We were forcing things on offense and really didn’t pick the tempo up until late in the second quarter.&uot;

Alex Lovorn was on fire for the Hornets from behind the arch, hitting three three-pointers in the second half.

this season,&uot; Waldrop said.

Lovorn finished with 11 points.

The Hornets prepare now to face the 5A Thompson Warriors Thursday night.

&uot;We’re going to have a good day of practice and get ready to play a really good ballclub,&uot; Waldrop said.

Tuscaloosa Academy 67, Kingwood Christian 54: After the Lions center Adam Irby left the game with a head injury, the Kingwood boys had no answer for Tuscaloosa Academy’s big man.

The Knights’ Scott Brenzier scored 20 points and finished with 18 rebounds as Tuscaloosa defeated Kingwood, 67-54.

Irby hit his head on the floor after trying to drive the ball and left with a possible concussion. Despite the injury, he finished tied for team-high points with teammate Nick Holcombe, netting 16.

Spain Park 51, Mountain Brook 37: Jonathan Hall had 15 points for Spain Park as the Jags’ defeated Mountain Brook, 51-37. Hall’s teammate Jake Drum added 10 points for Spain Park (15-8).

Oak Mountain 59, Thompson 51: Oak Mountain’s Bryant Gardner scored 14 points as the Eagles’ won their 20th game of the season. Oak Mountain is ranked sixth in the ASWA poll this week with a 10-0 area 6 record.

Briarwood Christian 62, Pelham 48: Nate Carlson finished with 17 points and 11 boards as the 5A Lions downed the 6A Panther Tuesday night, 62-48. Stephen Clark finished with 21 points for Pelham.

Altamont 78, Vincent 46: Cameron Posey netted 12 points for the Vincent Yellow Jackets Tuesday night but it proved to be to little to top Altamont, as the No.-1 ranked Knights won, 78-46.

Calera 86, Holy Family 76: Demarcus Dowdell scored a team-high 29 points and finished with 11 rebounds as the Eagles topped Holy Family Tuesday night, 86-76. T.J. Green added 28 points and finished with 14 assists for Calera.

Jefferson Christian Academy 90, Coosa Valley Academy 36: Chase Lacy led the Rebels with 12 points in their loss against Jefferson Christian Tuesday night. 90-36.

Cornerstone Christian 48, Shelby Academy 34: Ty Youngblood netted 21 points as the Cornerstone Chargers defeated cross-county rival Shelby Academy Tuesday night, 48-34. Colby Green and Ronny West each had 10 points for the Raiders in the losing effort
