Girls Tuesday night hoops: No. 4 Vestavia downs Lady Warriors

The Lady Warriors’ Chastity Herron scored 10 of her team-high 16 points in the final quarter of Tuesday night’s game against fourth-ranked Vestavia Hills, but it proved to be too late as Thompson fell, 53-42.

The Warriors held a one-point lead at 21-20 at halftime, but the Lady Rebels outscored THS, 19-6, in the third quarter to pull away in the Class 6A, Area 6 matchup.

&uot;We had great intensity in the first half,&uot; Thompson head coach Cara Crosslin said. &uot;But we slacked off in the second half.&uot;

In addition to her team-high in points, Herron added three steals and three rebounds while teammate Rhonda Watts finished with seven points and four rebounds.

With the victory, the Rebels stake their claim for the Area 6 title.

&uot;Vestavia is a very good team,&uot; Crosslin said. &uot;We didn’t execute when we needed to, we got into foul trouble and they took advantage of that.&uot;

Thompson falls to 20-5 overall on the season and 5-4 in area play.

Montevallo 43, Chelsea 29

The Montevallo Lady Bulldogs clinched the Class 4A, Area 8 tournament Tuesday night with a 43-29 victory over county-rival Chelsea

THe Lady Bulldogs’ Lakisha Brown finished with a team-hgih double-double of 20 points and 17 rebounds while her teammate, Candace Fields, netted 13 points in the victory.

THe Lady Bulldogs also earned the right to host the Area 8 tournament with the win.

Chelsea was led in scoring by Adair Bowman, who netted 11 points for the Lady Hornets in the losing effort.

Talladega 50, Briarwood 38 (OT)

The Briarwood Lady Lions could not capitalize with a late-game possession Tuesday night against area rival Talladega, eventually losing, 50-38, in overtime.

Ruth Ketcham scored a team-high 10 points for the Lady Lions as Talladega clinched the Class 5A, Area 8 title with the victory. With the loss the Lions’ season record now stands at 17-5.

Spain Park 66, Pelham 51

Lauren Dunning led the way for the Spain Park Lady Jaguars Tuesday night, netting 18 points as her team defeated Pelham, 66-51.

The Jags’ Stephie Dominguez added 11 points as Spain Park moved to a 15-7 record on the season.

Pelham was paced by Whitney Hudson, who finished with 13 points in the losing effort.

Kingwood Christian 50, Jefferson Christian 32

Hannah Phillips netted a team-high 23 points as the Kingwood Lady Lions topped Jefferson Christian Tuesday night, 50-32.

Kayla Cates added 15 points and 11 rebounds as the Lions moved to 18-3 on the season.

Shelby Academy 39, Pratville Christian 16

The Shelby Academy Lady Raiders earned a victory over Pratville Christian Tuesday night, 39-16.

Shelby’s Kimbrell Lee paced her team with 12 points and seven rebounds while teammates Kendra Bristow and Paris Reneau netted 11 points each. The Raiders improved their record to 10-6 with the win.

Cornerstone 36, East Memorial 19

Marybeth Willis lead the way for the Cornerstone Christian Lady Chargers Tuesday night, scoring 15 points to help her team defeat East Memorial, 36-19.

The Chargers’ Haley Anderson netted eight points and pulled down 20 rebounds for Cornerstone in the win.

Indian Springs 51, Parkway Christain 14

Indian Springs downed Parkway Christian 51-14 Tuesday night with the help of Latonzia Evans, who finished the game with team-high 11 points and seven rebounds.

The victory helped Indian Springs improve its record to 6-11 on the season.
