A community meeting will be held at Shelby Elementary on Thursday, Feb. 23 at 6 p.m. concerning changing the culture and attitudes at the school.

A new name for the school will also be discussed.

Shelby Elementary Principal Karen Mitchell stressed, however, that no one is saying the school name will be changed.

&8220;We haven&8217;t said we are doing it,&8221; Mitchell said.

She said the meeting would be an open forum.

And a vote would be taken only if discussion leads to the point where a vote is needed.

She said the idea for the community meeting actually came from a state Board of Education meeting workshop concerning changing school culture and attitudes.

And she said she wanted to invite both parents and community members to the meeting.

Mitchell pointed out that Shelby Elementary is located in Shelby County.

There is a Shelby, Ala., and a Shelby County Board of Education, often causing confusion about the schools.

She said the school often gets calls and faxes intended for the county.

Regarding any change in the name of the school, Shelby County School Superintendent Evan Major said, &8220;Until I know the community would want to do something, I would not carry it to the board of education. I think they need to know how the community feels.&8221;

Major stressed, &8220;I would have to the know it was an overwhelming majority.&8221;
