Calera citizens could soon see a number of improvements come to their local parks.
The Calera Parks and Recreation board is currently working to create a master plan for the city&8217;s three local parks.
Parks and Recreation director Stevie Edwards said his department is in the process of looking over a contract to hire an independent firm to help create the plan.
Some of the ideas the city is taking a serious look at include a skate park, tennis center and disc golf course.
&8220;What we&8217;d really like to do is make sure the community gets a chance to suggest what they would like to see in their parks,&8221; Edwards said. &8220;The master plan will allow us to manage the use of our park land in a better way.&8221;
Edwards said no timeline has been set on when the master plan would be created, but said he hopes it would happen by the end of the year.
&8220;We&8217;re looking for a long-term vision for our parks,&8221; he said.
The city currently maintain three major parks, including Oliver Park Sports Complex, George. W. Roy Recreational Park and the Ackridge Arboretum park.
Edwards said that the city is aiming to meet the needs of current citizens as well as those of new residents coming to the area.
&8220;We have a lot of people moving to our city right now,&8221; he said. &8220;A lot of them have seen features in parks from where they came from that they would like to see here.&8221;
Other considerations for park improvements include improved playgrounds, a health trail and a rock-climbing wall.
&8220;This plan will hopefully provide activities for seniors and children alike,&8221; Edwards said. &8220;We want to give them a number of places to go and things to do.&8221;
