There were 24,992 students in Shelby County Schools as of last Thursday.

Superintendent Evan Major reported that number at last week&8217;s meeting of the county Board of Education.

Major reported that much of the sickness that tends to creep into schools at this time of year appears to be taking it easy on Shelby County.

For the past month, he said, county schools have reported attendance percentages in the mid 90s.

The lowest percentage of all county schools was 91.6 percent (enrollment of 255) at Shelby Elementary.

Riverchase Middle (enrollment of 1,167) and Montevallo High (enrollment of 374) reported 92 percent attendance for the month while Columbiana Middle (enrollment of 515) reported 92.5 percent attendance.

Posting the highest percent in attendance was Oak Mountain Intermediate (enrollment of 778) at 96.3 percent. OMIS was followed closely by Valley Elementary (enrollment of 700) with a 96.1 percent attendance rate and Oak Mountain Elementary (enrollment of 860) with a 96 percent attendance.
