School Honors
Pantherettes are state champions
Pelham High School&8217;s Pantherette dance team earned the title of State Champion for the third consecutive year Jan. 14 at the Alabama Dance/Drill Team competition.
Held annually at Samford University&8217;s Wright Center, the competition features high school and middle school dance teams competing in jazz, high kick, pom, hip hop and novelty dances with optional ensemble and solo categories as well.
In the large high school division, Pelham earned first-place trophies with its high kick routine, its beach-theme prop/novelty dance and its jazz routine to Bohemian Rhapsody, which proved popular with the crowd as well as the judges.
The Pantherettes earned the highest overall score among the 16 competing high schools, receiving the Alabama State Dance Team Championship Award. The team also won the Highest-Scoring Routine award for high kick performance.
Senior and team captain Elizabeth Cochran won second place in the solo category.
The 2005-06 Pantherettes are: senior Elizabeth Cochran, captain; senior Samantha Rayburn; senior Jordan Strang; senior Erin Warner, co-captain; junior Molly Burns; junior Katie Jones; junior Dawn Lowery, co-captain; junior Suzanne Moore; junior Caroline Usher; sophomore Ashley Aenchbacher; sophomore Stephanie Boyd; sophomore Liz Grimes; sophomore Georgia Nolen; sophomore Annalee Woods; freshman Emily Busby; and freshman Morgan Vice. The team&8217;s choreographer is Allison Festavan of the Dance Et Cetera studio. Laura Cochran is sponsor.
Vincent teacher receives $2,400 grant
Sharon Martin, interventionist at Vincent Middle/High School, was awarded a $2,400 grant from State Rep. Mike Hill recently.
Half of the grant was received on Jan 25. The funds are to be used for purchase of computers, encyclopedias and calculators. The other half will be received in October, Hill told Martin.
&8220;These items will be valuable tools for students placed in ISD to complete assignments more effectively,&8221; Martin said. &8220;They certainly won’t be able to use the excuse that I have Stone Age material for them to use while doing research.&8221;
ISS students achieves perfect score
Jenna Caldwell, daughter of Harry and Carol Caldwell of Indian Springs and a junior at Indian Springs School, was the only college-bound student in Alabama and one of only 23 nationwide to achieve a 36, the highest possible composite score, on the December 2005 national test administration of the ACT.
