County teams kick off outdoor season at Hoover Relays Invite; BCS opens at Mountain Brook

Three Shelby County track and field teams kicked off their outdoor seasons Saturday at the Hoover Relays.

Spain Park&8217;s Adam Mims and William Green dominated the long jump and triple jump events, with Mims taking first in the long and Williams earning the top spot in the triple.

Mims won his event with a leap of 22 feet, two and a half inches while Green leapt 41 feet, 11 inches. Mims also finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 41 feet, nine and three-quarter inches.

Oak Mountain&8217;s Taylor Crane claimed first place in the 1600-meter run with a time of four minutes 33.48 seconds.

Crane&8217;s teammate Joe Gibson finished third in the race with a time of 4:42.62 while Spain Park&8217;s Sean Brown was close on Gibson&8217;s heels with a fifth place finish in a time of 4:44.42.

The Eagles&8217; James Hope took home third place in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.75 seconds while the Jaguars&8217; Markco Henderson finished fifth with a time of 11.06 seconds.

In the relay events, Spain Park&8217;s 4×100-meter relay team took home second place with a time of 43.66 seconds while the Jags&8217; 4×200-meter team finished fourth in a time of 1:32.27.

Oak Mountain&8217;s 4×800-meter relay squad took home second in their race with a time of 8:26.72 while the Eagles&8217; 4×1600-meter team finished second in their event with a time of 19:19.01. Spain Park&8217;s squad finished third in the event with a time of 19:40.83.

The Jags&8217; 1600 spring medley team took home fifth place with a time of 3:47.67 while the Eagles&8217; distance medley team finished third in their event with a time of 11:43.6.

Spain Park&8217;s William Green finished tied for second in the high jump with a leap of six feet, four inches.

The Jags&8217; Chris Spear and the Eagles&8217; Brad Passen finished second and third respectively in the pole vault with vaults of 13 feet, six inches and 13 feet even.

Spain Park&8217;s Ryan Bell took home second place finishes in both the shot put and discus throw with distances of 47 feet, 2.25 inches and 148 feet, five inches. The Jags&8217; J.T. Townsend finished fourth in the javelin throw with a distance of 134 feet, 10 inches.

On the girls&8217; side, Oak Mountain&8217;s Katie Quinn was the top individual county finisher with a second place finish in the pole vault.

Quinn vaulted a height of nine feet, six inches in the event while her teammate, Mary Grace DeCastra, finished close behind in fourth place with a vault of nine feet.

The Lady Eagles&8217; Christy Gaskill finished fourth in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:50.34.

Oak Mountain&8217;s 4×200-meter relay team took home third place in their event with a time of 1:49.74 while the Eagles&8217; 1600 sprint medley team finished second with a time of 4:27.59.

The Lady Eagles took home fourth place in the team standings with 66 points while the Spain Park girls finished tenth with 29 points.

On the boys&8217; side, Spain Park finished in third place with 84 points while Oak Mountain ended up fifth with 58 points. The Calera Eagles tied with the Oak Mountain B team with one point.

The Hoover Bucs swept first place in both the boys and girls competitions.

Briarwood Christian competes in Battle Royale

The Briarwood Christian Lions opened their track and field season at the Mountain Brook Battle Royale Invitational.

The Lions&8217; Riley White was the top finisher for his team, earning a second place finish in the 200-meter hurdles with a time of 26.32 seconds. White also took third in the 80-meter hurdles with a time of 12.15 seconds.

Briarwood&8217;s Will Post finished third in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, four inches as the Lions boys&8217; team finished fourth in the overall standings with 24 points.

The Briarwood girls squad finished sixth with four points while the Mountain Brook Spartans swept both the boys and girls competitions
