Local students head to Orlando to perform their patriotic show

A first for elementary students, the Elvin Hill Music Company has been selected to perform in a patriotic show at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla. on March 10.

With a certificate of recognition and special pins from Gov. Bob Riley in hand, students directed by Music Specialist Debra C. Horton from Elvin Hill Elementary will represent Shelby County in a patriotic show to be held at the Galaxy Theater of the Magic Kingdom.

The group has been invited to perform during Disney Magic Music Days in support of the Music Educators National Conference &8220;National Anthem Sing America&8221; project.

According to Disney, &8220;Sing America&8221; is dedicated to renewing national awareness of the patriotic tradition of the United States and the history of the National Anthem.

Horton said Elvin Hill is the first elementary group from Shelby County selected to perform at Disney World. She said participants are usually high school age or older.

Horton said she auditioned 125 students for the program and sent a tape to Disney World. She said Elvin Hill is the first elementary group from Shelby County to perform at Disney World.

The group includes: Kristin Agee, Bryanna Bailey, Taylor Blackwell, Brianna Buie, Kayle Cardwell, Anna M. Couch, Caleb Crowe, Devin Davis, Darla G. DeShazo, Elliott Folmar, Austin Foster, Will Gibson, Jaselyn Harrison, Jacqueline Head, Jamie Hillman, Sarah Horton, Sam Hutchison, Sam Jebeles, Brannon Jones, Patrick Knauer, Parker Owen, Hunter Ray, Tristan Robbins, Jonathan Seale, Jacob Tidmore, Grant Walkup, Jamie Alley and Josh Nowland.

Horton has spent her entire professional career, more than 20 years, working with the children of Shelby County.

The show entirely written by Horton will be a salute to the U.S. Armed Forces. Songs will include: We Are America, You&8217;re A Grand Old Flag, Yankee Doodle Dandy, Star Spangled Banner, Stars Fell On Alabama, Dixieland Jazz, Oh When the Saints Go Marching In, Oh How I Hate to Get Up In the Morning, Sound Off, Marine, Air Force, Navy and Army service songs, What I&8217;ll Do, My Buddy, America the Beautiful, God Bless the USA, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Disney Bow -When You Wish Upon A Star.

She said the group would accept donations to help with the cost of the trip. They will leave on March 9, perform on March 10 and return on March 13.

The special pins and certificate of appreciation from Gov. Riley were presented to the youngsters by Carol Hill, representing herself and her husband, State Rep. Mike Hill.

Gov. Riley wrote, &8220;On behalf of the citizens of Alabama, it is my privilege to award this certificate in recognition of your outstanding accomplishment in represented the state of Alabama in an exemplary manner. May I take this opportunity to offer my best wishes in performing at the Galaxy Theater in the Magic Kingdom, March 10, 2006.&8221;
