Thanks to an Enhancing Education Through Technology Grant a vocabulary bee was recently held between Shelby County schools using teleconference technology.

The contest originated from the Shelby County Instructional Services Center in Alabaster, and participating schools included Calera Elementary, Meadowview Elementary, Wilsonville Elementary, Thompson Intermediate and Oak Mountain Intermediate.

A third grade vocabulary bee was held Tuesday, Feb. 28 between Calera Elementary, Meadow View Elementary in Alabaster and Wilsonville Elementary. And Fourth and fifth graders competed on Thursday, March 2 from Calera Elementary, Oak Mountain Intermediate, Thompson Intermediate in Alabaster and Wilsonville Elementary.

The students could see the questions and students from other schools and technology personnel at the Shelby County Instruction Services Building where the teleconference originated could see the students.

According to resource teacher Leslie Cash and the Shelby County Schools Technology Office, the third grade competition was won by Calera Elementary&8217;s Sofia McDaniel. Second went to Brett Stevenson of Meadowview Elementary and third to Willie Traywick of Wilsonville Elementary.

The fourth grade winner was Thompson Intermediate&8217;s Sarah Williams. Second place went to Josh Purvis and third place to Abby Krause, also to Thompson Intermediate.

The fifth grade winner was Calera Elementary&8217;s Kymber McGiboney.
