Kevin Mark Peters will officially assume the duties of Chief of Police in Montevallo on Monday, April 3.

Mayor Sharon Anderson and the Montevallo City Council appointed Peters to the position in a special called meeting of City Council held Tuesday, March 15.

The current police sergeant and training officer for the Calera Police Department was appointed by Anderson and approved by resolution of the City Council.

He was hired at an annual salary of $58,550.83.

Peters and his wife of 14 years, Shannon, currently make their home outside the city of Montevallo near Shelby Academy.

As a condition of his employment, if he should change residence during his employment with Montevallo, he will move within the city limits.

The council also approved a resolution allowing Peters to work on a part-time basis until he officially assumes the duties of police chief at an hourly rate corresponding to his salary as chief.

Peters said he already knew many Montevallo police officers and those he didn&8217;t know, he said, are just friends he hasn&8217;t met yet.

He was selected from a slate of more than 40 candidates according to Montevallo Public Safety Director Tom Smitherman.

&8220;I&8217;m excited, and I&8217;m ready to get started,&8221; Peters said.

Peters earned his bachelor&8217;s degree in criminal justice from Troy State University. He serves as minister to students and youth at Wilton Baptist Church.

Peters said he considers Montevallo his hometown and has served in the Montevallo Youth Athletic Association as an assistant coach.

He has served as a police sergeant, patrol and training officer with the Calera Police Department since 2001.

His experience has included management and administration of a budget; designing, organizing and instructing training classes; managing a minimum staffing schedule for a patrol shift on a seven-day week; and supervising a patrol shift independent of upper management
