Inmate still in jail after escape attempt

An escaped inmate was captured about 20 minutes after he fled from the Shelby County Courthouse on Thursday.

Inmate Rex McGovern Edmonds was being transported to the courthouse on March 30 at about 1 p.m. along with other for judicial hearings, according to information released by Shelby County officials.

Following a chase through downtown Columbiana, Sheriff Chris Curry and a court security officer apprehended Edmonds off Carter Lane.

Officials said it appeared Edmonds was able to slip his restraints and fled on foot from the courthouse to the 100 block of Carter Lane where he was captured.

No one was injured during the incident.

Edmonds was being held on three counts of fraudulent use of a credit card with a bond of $5,000 each.

Curry thanked Alabama State Troopers and the Columbiana Police Department for their quick response and assistance in the capture.

Bond for Edmonds has been raised from $15,000 to more than $1 million following the escape attempt.

In addition to his credit card fraud charges, Edmonds has also been charged with second degree escape
