An investigation continues into the counties first slayings of the year.

Detectives from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department are investigating a double homicide that occurred early Sunday morning at an apartment complex off Highway 280 in Inverness.

Deputies found the bodies of Michael Adrian Edwards and an unidentified female when they responded to an anonymous phone call shortly after midnight, Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry announced at a Monday afternoon press conference.

The caller reported gunshots at 5808 Hunt Cliff Road, part of the Cahaba Lakes Apartment Complex.

&uot;We definitely know it was not a murder/suicide,&uot; Curry said.

Due to a lack of details about the crime, leads have been slow to develop.

&uot;At the present time, we have no suspects and no one in custody. We don’t know what the motive is,&uot; Curry said.

A canvass of the neighborhood has turned up little in the investigation.

The victim’s next-door neighbor told deputies he did not hear any gunshots on the night of the crime.

Sheriff Curry asked the person who originally called the police to contact his office again.

Edwards, 26, lived at the Hunt Cliff address.

The female victim was found with no identification. Her name is being withheld pending notification of the next-of-kin.

Curry would not speculate whether she lived in the apartment or regarding her relationship with Edwards.

Cahaba River Apartments is an 801-unit complex, located behind the Home Depot on Highway 280.

The slayings were the first this year in Shelby County, according to Curry. Six homicides were reported in 2005
