Smith wins geography bee at Samford

Alan Smith, a home-schooled student from Montevallo, won third place in the Geographic Bee state finals at Samford University on Friday, March 31.

One hundred students from schools in 27 Alabama counties competed in the event.

As a finalist, Smith, 14, son of Carol and Ken Smith, won $50 and a National Geographic globe.

Lowell Van Ness, a student at Bumpus Middle School in Hoover, won first place and the right to represent the state in National Geographic Bee in Washington, D.C. in late May.

Montevallo resident to perform

Coty Lovelady, a ninth grader, who lives in Montevallo and attends the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham,

will be performing in the Summerfest musical &uot;Once On This Island&uot; June 27-July 16

MHS graduate receives scholarship

Senior Rachel E. Ford of Montevallo is among 19 students named communications department scholars for the 2005-06 school year at Mississippi State University. A broadcasting major and President’s Scholar, she is receiving a $1,500 Turner Catledge Scholarship, a memorial by the New York Times to the 1922 MSU graduate who became the newspaper’s executive editor.

Ford is a 2002 Montevallo High School graduate and the daughter of Fred and Christy Ford.

She is a member of Gamma Beta Phi and Golden Key honor societies as well as the MSU Student Broadcasting Society and Campus Activities Board’s entertainment committee. She has received Catledge Scholarships for the past two years.
