Alabaster has a new street light installation policy.

The City Council approved a new policy Monday night, which includes:

– Request for streetlights will be presented to the assistant to the mayor for review.

– Public Works will check the proposed location and make a recommendation based upon criteria such as distanced to the nearest adjacent lights (more than 500 feet unless geographic conditions warrant); existing poles in place or not (a pole may be recommended), size and type of light will be based on standard applications set by Alabama Power; the assistant to the mayor or the mayor will contact Alabama Power for assistance.

– Assistant to the mayor will prepare a street light request form to present to the council for consideration.

– Once approved, street light requests will be attested and forwarded to Alabama Power by the city clerk and copies provided to the Public Works director and mayor&8217;s office for files.

– When the city agrees to pay for the fixture, the developer is billed an upfront cost for the cost of the poles.

– The city&8217;s policy is not to pay for any decorative poles.

– Developers will make their own arrangements for decorative poles.

– Cost charged to the city are based on current published SLM rate.

The council went on to approve three street light requests for Fulton Springs Road, one for 1805 Mohawk Driver, one for 1231/1238 Bennett Circle, six for Mountain Lake, one for 119 and Fulton Springs Road, one for 119and Fourth, and 60 400-watt lights for 119.

In other matters the council:

– Acknowledged that an annexation request for two parcels off Highway 17 near Fox Valley Farms Estates has expired.

– Approved two annexation requests for Mayhall Properties on Highway 119 for 7.52 acres and 6.6 acres.

– Approved the annexation of a small triangle of property requested by the city at Highway 31 and Colonial Promenade.

– Approved a restaurant retail liquor license application for Papa Saia&8217;s Pizza relocating to 251 Buck Creek Plaza.

– Approved the waving of vendor fees for City Fest 2006.

– Set a public hearing on June 5 for a rezoning request for 1 acre from M-1 (light industrial) to B-3 (community business) at Highway 31 South.

– Approved a retail liquor Class 1-license for The Concrete Cowboy LLC at 304,308,312 and 316 Montevallo Road.

– Set a work session for April 24 at 6 p.m. at the municipal services building
