Class 5A state track and field preview

Briarwood Christian&8217;s Tyler Till was the top finisher for the Lions at the Class 5A, Section 3 championships track and field meet held at Northridge High School.

Till took home first place in the boys&8217; 800-meter run with a time of 2:04.79.

Eight other Shelby County athletes finished in the top three at the meet.

Briarwood&8217;s Riley White finished second in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 40.61 seconds while teammate Nate Carlson finished second in the javelin throw with a distance of 147 feet, nine inches.

BCS had two boys&8217; relay teams finish in the top three at the meet.

The Lions&8217; 4×100-meter squad took home third place in its event with a time of 44.63 seconds while Briarwood&8217;s 4×400-meter team finished second with a time of 3:30.98.

Briarwood Lady Lion Katie Norton took home third place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 17.57 seconds while the BCS girls&8217; 4×800-meter relay team finished second with a time of 10:22.23.

Shelby County&8217;s Ashley McDaniel finished third in the girls&8217; javelin with a distance of 89 feet, nine inches.

In team scoring, both the Briarwood Christian boys&8217; and girls&8217; teams finished fourth, with the boys earning 70 points and the girls taking home 47 points.

Northridge swept both the boys&8217; and girls&8217; team competitions with 173 points for the boys and 245 points for the girls.

The top two finishers in each event at the sectional championships automatically qualify for the AHSAA, Class 5A state track meet at Heardmont Park this Thursday through Saturday. Six to eight &8220;wildcard&8221; spots are also given to the next best times after the top two in each event.
