Jane Bailey is the new director of the Columbiana Public Library.

The Columbiana City Council unanimously hired her during its regular May 2 meeting.

Mayor Allan Lowe said, &8220;We are very thankful and fortunate to have someone with her experience as our library director.&8221;

Bailey is not new to library patrons in Columbiana.

She has worked for the Harrison Regional Library in Columbiana and the Columbiana Public Library alternately for a total of 16 years.

A native of Wyandotte, Mich., Bailey previously worked for the Harrison Regional Library for four years and the Columbiana Public Library for seven years.

At the Harrison Regional Library, she worked in administration as a reference librarian. For the Columbiana Public Library, she said she did a little of everything, shelving, processing books, helping with programs and decorations.

She came back to work for the Columbiana Public Library in 2001 and has served as acting director of the library since last December.

She and her husband, James, have been married for 31 years and have three children. Her youngest son, Jared, just graduated from Loyola University in New Orleans and is a journalist.

She also has five grandsons.

&8220;I&8217;m excited (about being named library director). I can&8217;t want for the library to begin moving forward. I feel like we&8217;ve been at a standstill since December,&8221; Bailey said.

She said she wants to resume the late hours of the library until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which would allow her to offer evening programs.

&8220;I just feel like we are ready to move forward. The summer reading program will begin in a couple of weeks,&8221; she said.

&8220;I really want to offer more programs for young adults and get teens into the library.&8221;

She said in 16 years there has been no programming for young adults at the Columbiana facility.

The council approved the payment of the library director&8217;s position from Pay Grade XIV to Pay Grade XI with the designation No MLS (Master of Library Science).

In another matter, Lowe said the council approved a resolution accepting its mandatory ADEM Waste Treatment Report, which gave the city all &8220;superlatives.&8221;
