The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles fell just short of winning their first state soccer title in school history on Saturday, falling to Grissom in the girls&8217; 5A championship game, 5-3, on penalty kicks at Joe Hunt Park in Huntsville.

The two teams played to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation and two overtime periods, making a penalty kick shootout the deciding factor for the 5A title.

Grissom (19-7-2) converted on all five penalty kicks while the Lady Eagles (19-4-2) had one shot stopped by Tigers&8217; goalkeeper Lauren Kelly, giving the girls in orange a 2-1 victory.

&8220;Our team has played really well this entire season,&8221; Oak Mountain interim head coach Kenneth Archer said. &8220;But we couldn&8217;t find the back of the net today. If you can&8217;t score points you can&8217;t win games.&8221;

After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, Grissom capitalized nine minutes into the second.

OMHS&8217;s Brittany Correia scored the game-tying goal two minutes later to send the game into overtime.

The loss marks the end of seven Oak Mountain seniors&8217; soccer careers
