In its 130-year history, Shiloh United Methodist Church has weathered fires and thunderstorms and witnessed its fair share of births and deaths.

But during that time, the church has never wavered in its mission to serve Calera and the surrounding community.

For its effort, Shiloh received a certificate for community service from Calera Mayor George Roy during its Homecoming April 23.

More than 150 people attended the church&8217;s anniversary ceremony, including two former pastors.

The church was established in 1876 on land donated by the Busby family.

The original log cabin burned down and was replaced by the existing structure in 1898.

With time, the church expanded the sanctuary and added a fellowship hall.

Enriched in tradition, Shiloh still uses the schoolhouse bell, which now rests inside the church&8217;s steeple.

Shiloh members are also very proud of their

&8220;Wall of Memories,&8221; an entire hallway filled with photographs recapping church history from the first building through the present.

&8220;The church has always been active in the community,&8221; said Pauline Ellison, wife of fourth-generation member David Ellison.

Recent mission projects include yard sells and a retirement home ministry.

&8220;It&8217;s a small church with a loving fellowship. We&8217;ve very open to all people,&8221; said Joe Raines, pastor.

Last year, Shiloh housed a Hurricane Katrina evacuee family in its parsonage and collected coats for families at Oak Mountain State Park.

&8220;It wasn&8217;t being used so we took in a family that needed a place to stay,&8221; said Ellison.

The church has services Sundays and is located just off Hwy 31 near the Shelby and Chilton county lines.
