Grinding through the park

The annual BUMP and Grind mountain bike race at Oak Mountain State Park can hardly be considered a local event.

The race, hosted by the Birmingham Urban Mountain Peddlers (BUMP) and now in its 12th year at the park, attracts riders from all over the Southeast and from as far away as Oklahoma and Texas.

With an estimated 650 bikers competing in various age groups, BUMP director and president Randall Naccari said the race has grown over the past decade.

&8220;This race has grown a lot,&8221; he said. &8220;It started out as a pretty local race and grew into a regional race.&8221;

Naccari said the variety offered by the 18-mile loop attracts riders from all over the Southeast.

&8220;This is one of the top 50 trails in the nation,&8221; he said. &8220;People all over the country know about this trail and it&8217;s very well rated.&8221;

Over 40 locals from all over the Shelby County area joined this year&8217;s field of racers.

&8220;I like certain sections of the course,&8221; county resident Chris Stori said.

&8220;Some of the hard parts are worth riding to get to the fun parts.&8221;

Stori said another appealing part of the daylong race is the camaraderie between riders.

&8220;It&8217;s a great place to come and spend time with other mountain bikers,&8221; he said.
