Special to the Reporter

Susannah Higgins caps her 2006 reign as Miss Shelby County with an appearance in the Miss Alabama Pageant beginning tonight at Samford University.

Higgins will compete in swimwear tonight, evening wear on Thursday and talent Friday. The top ten will be chosen Saturday.

&8220;As my reign as Miss Shelby County comes to an end, there are so many people that I would like to thank,&8221; Higgins said. &8220;I would like to thank Miss Melody and Mrs. Hayden, the directors of the pageant for all of their support and encouragement. Also, I would like to thank the Vignette Club and all of the sponsors of the pageant for making the Miss Shelby County pageant possible.

&8220;The Pageant Tree in Alabaster has helped with my wardrobe for the Miss Alabama Pageant and my gowns for appearances this year. The Leadership Shelby Team and Chris Monceret with the Department of Human Resources have helped me to promote my platform, &8216;Project PACH, Providing All Children Homes,&8217; a program to encourage families to open their homes to the children who desperately need them and to make Shelby County and the state of Alabama aware of this growing need.&8221;

The Miss Shelby County Pageant is planned for June 16 at the Shelby County High School auditorium. The pageant is a scholarship event and a preliminary for the Miss Alabama competition.

&8220;My wish for this year&8217;s Miss Shelby County Pageant 2007 is for many talented and deserving young ladies to participate in the pageant,&8221; Higgins said. &8220;It is a wonderful opportunity for scholarship money, wonderful gifts which I really enjoyed using, but most of all the rewarding experiences that I have had.&8221;
