Greater Shelby County Education Foundation awards grants

The Greater Shelby County Education Foundation recently awarded $25,000 in mini grants.

According to Carol Bruser, executive director of the tax-exempt, non-profit, community based GSCEF, the grants are given directly to teachers to fund creative and innovative classroom and school projects that provide students with unique learning experiences not provided through existing funding or programs.

She said grants range from $100 to $1,000 each and requests for 2006 were for more than $132,000.

The following teachers were awarded 2006 grants by school:

-Montevallo High School: Rose M. D&8217;Alessio, $499.99, Foreign Language; Jennifer Turner, $1,000, U.S. History; and Anita Glover, $1,000, Library Media.

-Shelby County High: Ann-Marie Sturdvant, $500, Math; Donna Lett, $500, Math; Connie Wheeler, $500, Math; and Steve Latham, $1,000, Library Media.

-Columbiana Middle: Sheikla Blount, $1,000, Library Media.

-Thompson High School: Alan Gardner, $500, Theater Arts.

-Calera Middle/High: Rebecca McKenzie, $1000, Library Media.

-Vincent High: Diana Lee, $221.16, Reading/Science/Math; and Mimi Green, (Middle) $994.56, Guidance.

-Oak Mountain High: Teresa Boody, $450, Latin; and Sharon Morgan, $900, Theatre.

-Montevallo Middle: Suzanne Clemmons, Kenya Martin, $500, Math and Reading/Language Arts.
