Get behind new school leader

Now that the dust has settled and Randy Fuller has prevailed in what was a three-way race for Shelby County School superintendent, it is time for the entire county to pull together.

Fuller, Tom Ferguson and Gary Minnick hit the campaign trail each with something to offer voters.

Despite an endorsement from Minnick, Fuller prevailed with some 53 percent of the vote over Ferguson in a runoff.

Fuller served as principal of Oak Mountain High. Ferguson served as superintendent of operations for Shelby County Schools. And Minninck served as principal for Vincent High.

Seeking the same office from such diverse positions and working in such diverse areas of the county, it would be easy to imagine a division of voters in the county along such lines.

But from the air, Shelby County is one big beautiful, growing county. There are no lines separating Pelham, Vincent and Columbiana.

There is but one Shelby County School System. And it is the interest of every child in Shelby County from Vincent in the south to Montevallo and Pelham and Oak Mountain to the north that counts.

It is time for everyone in Shelby County to pull together and help the new school superintendent find solutions to building and maintenance needs as well as the equipment and books and programs and qualified teachers to help Shelby County children learn.

Fuller replaces Evan Major who served with class and dignity. We encourage everyone to show Fuller the same respect and to work together to move Shelby County forward
