Two Helena residents have been charged with first-degree child abuse of a 22-month-old girl.

Sandra Thomas, 25, and boyfriend Christopher Campbell, 24, are being held in the Shelby County jail on $250,000 bond each.

The charges came after the Helena police were notified on July 31 by Children&8217;s Hospital officials that the couple had brought the young girl in for treatment of multiple skull fractures.

&8220;The medical staff had their suspicions about how the injuries occurred,&8221; Helena Police Sergeant Brad Flynn said. &8220;The explanations that the two were giving the hospital staff were just not adding up.&8221;

Upon questioning the two individuals, Flynn said their stories continued to not make sense.

&8220;They said that the child had run into a desk one point and that a telephone had been dropped on her head at another point,&8221; he said. &8220;That reinforced our findings that this was intentional.&8221;

Helena police presented the case to the Shelby County District Attorney&8217;s office on Friday, which in turn issued arrest warrants for aggravated child abuse for both the individuals.

Flynn confirmed that the girl had been released from the hospital on Friday and was now in the custody of the Alabama Department of Human Resources

&8220;This case was very much a high priority for us,&8221; Flynn said. &8220;We are glad that we could get this child out of these peoples&8217; hands.&8221;

Flynn said a number of hearings will be held soon to determine who will have custody of the young girl
