Several members of the Wilton Baptist Church youth group have enrolled in a four-year, globetrotting leadership workshop.
Nine students are participating in the Student Leadership University. SLU is a faith-based program founded by the Rev. Jay Strack.
The program&8217;s goal is &8220;to train tomorrow&8217;s leaders, today.&8221; SLU encourages students to excel and &8220;stand above the crowd,&8221; according to Montevallo Police Chief Kevin Peters, who is also Wilton&8217;s youth pastor.
The students who participated were Kimberly Boyd, Corey Duplechain, Jonathan Holmes, Brittani Landers, Alex Murdoch, Joshua Otts, Maeghen Pickett, Coleman Sears and Joseph Wilson.
Students also learn about time management, goal setting, conflict resolution and dealing with difficult people.
The program run for four summers and is in four different locations. The first year, students work on personal leadership in Orlando, Fla.
The next year they travel to Washington, D.C. to learn how they impact the nation.
The third year, students are off to London, Paris, Normandy and Oxford to see how leadership can have global effects.
The final year of SLU is a Mediterranean cruise to Italy, where the youth study the history of their faith.
Members of Wilton Baptist&8217;s youth group are enrolled in both the first and second year of the program.
Liberty Baptist Church in Chelsea also has had teens participate in the program for several years. This year, Kevin Honeycutt, Rachel Smith, Jonathan Smith, Charity Wood and Cory Vines went to London and Paris for a week.
