A meadow is no place to be when a hungry lion is on the prowl.

The Meadowview football team must have sensed they were in the wrong place when they showed up to play the Kingwood Christian Lions last Friday.

Coach Jerry Stearns&8217; Lions downed Meadowview 27-12 with all of the scoring on both sides taking place in the first half.

Meadowview scored the first 6 points of the game, but Kingwood answered with a 16-yard touchdown strike from Andrew Pearce to Cody Owens.

Pearce later hit Owens on a 30-yard strike and scored the extra point to put Kingwood up 13-0.

Meadowview would answer, but then it was all Lions.

Pearce next hit Owens on a 22-yard pass play and Andrew Steele returned an interception 22 yards for another score. Pearce added the PAT&8217;s and the Lions cruised to a 27-12 victory.

Last week, Stearns was not happy with his team&8217;s play even in victory. He thought his team allowed the opponent to get back into a contest. This week he said, &8220;We played a lot better.&8221;

The stepped up play by the Lions could be important this Friday night when Kingwood hosts Shelby Academy, The Raiders have a potent running game.

Against Meadowview Kingwood quarterback Pearce completed 14 of 25 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. Cody Owens had 13 receptions for 114 yards and three touchdowns. And John Butts had six carries for 44 yards.

Owens also had three tackles and one knockdown pass and Butts had seven tackles. Butts also had one catch for 15 yards.

Overall Kingwood had 246 yards passing, and 32 yards rushing to 30 yards passing and 182 yards rushing for Meadowview.

RAIDERS SLAM OPEN DOOR

The Shelby Academy Raiders slammed Open Door last Friday 55-0.

The best thing Raider head football coach DeWayne Kervin could say abut a contest like this was, &8220;We got a lot of people in who desperately needed playing time.&8221;

Kervin said he pulled his starters after the first series of the second half. But for Open Door that was one play too long.

The Raiders scored on a 55-yard run by Cody Wilson on the first play from scrimmage to start the second half. Wilson added the point after and the Raiders led 41-0.

Kervin said the victory was a good team effort and that there was improvement.

Quarterback Cody Jones went one for two passing for 20 yards and one touchdown and one interception.

Wilson carried the load for the Raiders three times for 105 yards and two touchdowns while Brandon Horton carried 10 times for 122 yards and four touchdowns and Lovoy carried once for 51 yards.

Wilson had eight tackles; Rick McBride had seven tackles and Michael Atchison had five tackles.

The Raiders made 15 first downs to zero for Open Door; rushed 29 times for 369 yards to 36 times for 62 yards for the visitors; and passed for 20 yards to zero for the opponents.

The Raiders had no turnovers, no punts and no fumbles.

Shelby Academy will travel to play Kingwood next week.

CHARGERS FALL TO S. CHOCTAW

The Cornerstone Christian School Chargers fell to South Choctaw 26-7 on the road last Friday night.

Charger head football coach Tim Smith said his team was just out-played and out-hustled in the first half when South Choctaw scored all their points.

He noted that South Choctaw did not score again after his team settled down.

The difference, however, was that Cornerstone could not hold onto the ball.

Smith said his team got inside the opponents 20 three times and could not score, giving up the football on three fumbles and two interceptions.

On the positive side of things offensively, Cornerstone quarterback Jake Horton was seven for 18 in passing for118 yards and one touchdown.

Blake Etress caught four catches for 81 yards and a 50-yard touchdown strike. And Kirk Robinson had two catches for 30 yards.

Avery Alexander had 24 carries for 124 yards.

On defense, Kirk Robinson had 17 tackles, 14 solo; Kirk Johnson had 13 tackles, 10 solo; Avery Alexander had six tackles five solo and two for loss; and Josh Criswell had 11 tackles, eight solo, two sacks, one tackle for loss and two fumble recoveries.

CVA&8217;S MACKIN RECORDS FIRST WIN

The Coosa Valley Rebels claimed their first win under new head football coach Steve Mackin at home last Friday night.

The Rebels downed West Alabama 21-18.

Mackin said his team proved it could play hard in its season opener against Central Christian, but this time they had something to show for it … a win.

On the night, Chase Ward had 19 carries for 106 yards and two touchdowns; Steven Clinkscales had 11 carries for 60 yards and one touchdown; and Chase Lacy had one catch for 45 yards.

He said the win was more important for his kids than him. And he said they were excited about the result.

J.B. Ripley had six tackles, David McLain had five tackles; Rob Keen had five tackles; Brandon Batchelor had five tackles; Clinkscales had four tackles and Lacy had two tackles. &8220;I think it was a very big and positive step for our program in the right direction.&8221;

Mackin said quarterback Whit Lovelady went 1-7-1 for 45 yards.

The Rebels had 12 first downs and gained 166 yards on the ground on 30 carries. While the Rebels threw one interception they recovered two fumbles from their opponents
