The Calera Fire Department is offering a CPR for Family and Friends Course. It is held on the first Thursday of every month at 6 p.m. and lasts approximately two hours. The next class will be this Thursday, Sept. 7.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion from the Calera Fire Department. The class is free to the public and registration is not required.

The class targets all untrained &8220;lay&8221; rescuers, including children. &8220;It is the perfect class for family members of patients at risk for sudden cardiac death, as well as those just needing basic rescue skills for loved ones,&8221; said fire department officials.

The course teaches fundamentals in CPR and relief of foreign-body airway obstruction.

It presents information about the American Heart Association&8217;s (AHA) adult chain of survival and signs of heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke and choking.

The course also presents information about the AHA pediatric infant and child chain of survival, signs of choking, and prevention of sudden infant death syndrome.
