Shelby County water officials are extending the voluntary water restrictions until Oct. 1.

County utilities manager Charles Lay said the extension of the restrictions was expected due to weather trends expected in the month of September.

&8220;September is historically a very hot and dry month,&8221; Lay said. &8220;We generally see our highest demand for water during that time.&8221;

The restrictions called for by the Shelby County Commission ask that households with even number addresses water outside on Monday and Thursday between 6 a.m. and 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.

Odd number addresses are being asked to water during the same hours on Tuesday and Friday. No outside water use on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday allows time for water systems to recover and replenish, Lay said.

Lay said the voluntary conservation effort have been working this summer and believes that continuing through the end of the month will put the county water levels where they need to be.

&8220;We should be were we need to be at the end of September,&8221; Lay said. &8220;I&8217;m appreciative for all of those in the community that have worked with us this summer to ensure that we have enough water for our county&8217;s needs.&8221;
