The Class 2A Region 5 Vincent Yellow Jackets are now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in region play following their 20-12 home win over regional opponent Cleveland last Friday night.
After having opened the season against a tough 3A Calera, the Jackets seem to be settling in nicely with the 2A opponents against whom they are meant to compete.
But Vincent head football coach Dwight Spradley wasn&8217;t quite so quick to brag. He said, &8220;We were fortunate they had a couple more turnovers than we did and penalties than we did.&8221;
He also said he was glad his team played a team the caliber of Calera before meeting a region opponent.
But Spradley admitted to seeing improvement in the turnover department (just one this week) and in the play of the defense.
Spradley showed a little hint of pleasure in the win against Cleveland when he said, &8220;It&8217;s a lot easier to correct mistakes when you win.&8221;
He also had good words to say about the play of his team.
&8220;Corey DeLoach threw the ball well.&8221; He was nine of 15 passing for 149 yards and one touchdown.
&8220;Octavius Looney had a good night catching the ball.&8221; He caught four passes for 90 yards and a touchdown.
&8220;And Orlando Pelmer ran well.&8221; He carried the load 26 times for 112 yards and two touchdowns.
He said Looney also made an interception and Justin Peterson had a fumble recovery.
Defensively, Josh Wallace had 10 tackles, Peterson had nine tackles and Terrence Carter had 10 tackles.
Cleveland struck first and took a 12-8 lead into the half. But Vincent&8217;s defense stepped up and prevented any further scores as the Jackets pulled away 20-12.
Vincent scored in the second quarter on a DeLoach to Looney 30-yard pass and a DeLoach to Peterson 2-point play.
Pelmer scored on runs of 2-yards and 5-yards.
Against Cleveland, the jackets had 149 passing and 111 yards rushing for 260 yards total offense.
The Jackets go on the road this Friday to play region opponent Cold Springs
