You may have noticed a little crispness in the air lately. It happens every year about this time. The days have cooled off a little, the air is somewhat dryer and the nighttime temps are actually in the 60&8217;s for a change.

That means it&8217;s football season! It also means that now is the beginning of a perfect time to plant trees and shrubs.

Although we still have some rainless days ahead, you can go ahead and start moving your shrubbery or trees that were planted in the wrong place. Just remember that they will need extra water to get established.

Another thing to consider is adding a light fertilizer such as Root Stimulator(r). This will be the last fertilizer application of the season for your transplanted trees or shrubs and that product will help root growth without inducing much top growth that could get burned after our first frost.

It is still too early for pansies, but you can plant mums, marigolds, snapdragons, dianthus, digitalis and even Shasta daisies. Now is still a good time to plant daylilies. They may not bloom this year, but they will continue to build roots throughout the fall and winter.

There&8217;s no reason to wait on filling your planting beds with color for the fall.

Oregano, arugula, rosemary, thyme and cilantro are excellent choices for fall herbs. One other herb that I like to use as an accent plant in my flower beds is parsley. Whether you use the flat leaf parsley or the extra-triple curled variety, it will add some brilliant green to your plantings all through the winter.

On planting spring bulbs: You can go ahead and buy your bulbs now. I would wait to plant them for about a month. This will give you an excellent opportunity to chill them in your refrigerator, just in case they haven&8217;t had enough chill hours. This is especially important if you are going to force bloom them for the winter solstice holidays.
