Hornets face tough test in Ben Russell

Shelby County football teams performed remarkably well this past Friday night in earning much needed wins and performing valiantly in defeat.

Oak Mountain surprised me at Homewood and Spain Park played well against the No. 1 ranked high school football team in the nation.

I was 9-4 this week and 28-14 overall in my predictions for 66.6 percent accuracy.

This week I see 5A match up Chelsea and Benjamin Russell as the game of the week. Chelsea and Briarwood are both 2-0 in region play and this could be a separation game.

Chelsea 5A (3-0, 2-0) is coming off a big 28-21 region win at John Carroll and will host region opponent Benjamin Russell, which lost to Briarwood 17-14.

-Game of the Week Prediction: Benjamin Russell 21, Chelsea 14.

Briarwood 5A (2-1, 2-0) is coming off a big 17-14 region win at Benjamin Russell and will host region opponent Anniston, which lost to Moody 33-19.

-Prediction: Briarwood, 35, Anniston, 7.

Calera 3A (3-0,2-0) is coming off a 34-13 crushing of region opponent Montgomery Catholic on the road and will travel to face region opponent Marbury, which lost to Montevallo 27-12.

-Prediction: Calera, 42, Marbury, 14.

Coosa Valley Academy 1A AISA (2-2, 2-2) is coming off a 41-14 loss at home against Shelby Academy and will travel to Springwood, which lost to Kingwood 42-13, for a 1A versus 2A match.

-Prediction: Springwood 28, Coosa Valley 14.

Cornerstone 1A AISA (2-2, 2-2) is coming off a 25-12 region win at West Alabama and will host Open Door for homecoming. Open Door has losses to Coosa Valley and Shelby Academy.

-Prediction: Cornerstone 28, Open Door 0.

Kingwood 2A AISA (4-0, 2-0) is coming off a 42-13 region win at Springwood and will host region opponent Lakeside, which beat Meadowview 21-6.

-Prediction: Kingwood 42, Lakeside 21.

Montevallo 3A (2-1, 1-1) is coming off a 27-12 region win at home against Marbury and will host region opponent Montgomery Catholic, which fell to Calera 34-13.

-Prediction: Montevallo 21, Montgomery Catholic 14.

Oak Mountain 6A (1-2, 1-1) is coming off a big 21-0 region win at Homewood and will host region opponent Minor, which lost to Mountain Brook 35-21.

-Prediction: Oak Mountain 14, Minor 7.

Pelham 6A (2-1,2-0) is coming off a 34-6 whipping of region opponent Northridge on the road and will travel to face region opponent Hueytown, which whipped Paul Bryant 37-0.

-Prediction: Pelham 28, Hueytown 26.

Spain Park 6A (2-1, 1-1) is coming off a tough 40-28 loss at home against Hoover and will travel to face region opponent Vestavia, which carved up Carver 45-8.

-Prediction: Vestavia 28, Spain Park 14.

Shelby Academy 1A AISA (3-1, 3-0) is coming off a 41-14 region win at Coosa Valley and will host region opponent Warrior, which is reportedly the worst team in the AISA.

-Prediction: Shelby Academy 52, Warrior 0.

Shelby County 5A (2-1, 1-1) is coming off a hard fought overtime win 48-42 at region opponent Demopolis and will host region opponent Chilton County, which beat McAdory 23-16.

-Prediction: Shelby County 21, Chilton County 7.

Thompson 6A (2-1, 1-1) is coming off a 21-7 region win at Hillcrest and will host region opponent Jackson Olin, which fell to Tuscaloosa County 58-20.

-Prediction: Thompson 21, Jackson Olin 14.

Vincent 2A (2-1, 2-0) is coming off a 12-9 region win at Cold Springs and will host region opponent J. B. Pennington.
