A 5-1 vote by the Shelby County Planning Commission paved the way Monday for a condominium project in the Oak Mountain area.

The project, called &8220;The Crest at Highland Lakes,&8221; will include four residential buildings and one office building along Razorback Ridge, off Highway 280 on Oak Mountain.

The proposal replaces the developer&8217;s plans for 80 patio homes that were given the green light earlier this year by the commission.

The change will drop the square footage of the building rooftops from over 260,000 square feet to around 46,000 square feet, Eddleman Properties engineer Bryson Weygand said during the meeting.

Opponents of the development expressed concerns of increased traffic, property values and overcrowding local schools.

Developers for the project argue, however, that the majority of residents that would likely purchase the homes would be &8220;empty-nesters and 60-something retirees.&8221;
