The Briarwood Christian Lions gave the Homewood Patriots something to chew on last Friday night when the 5A power took down the 6A Pats 17-7 on the road.

&8220;I like the way we started the game with a 58-yard touchdown ending drive,&8221; said Briarwood head football coach Fred Yancey. &8220;We were ready to play.&8221;

Yancey has amassed a record of 199-71-1 for his total career and is 158-51 at Briarwood.

Handing out high praise for his Lions, Yancey pointed to the offensive play of Jonathan Sillers against Homewood. He caught nine passes for 77 yards and a touchdown.

Yancey credited Bo Walters, who had 16 tackles, and Alex Davis, Daniel Forest, Jake Moorer and Gil Townes, who combined to sack the Homewood quarterback eight times.

&8220;This was a big win because not many teams go into Waldrop Stadium and come out with a victory,&8221; said Yancey.

That game opening drive Yancey mentioned was capped by a 1-yard Walters run and Matthew Gordon kick. Gordon would add a 30-yard field goal to his resume&8217; in the second quarter.

Barrett Trotter connected with Sillers for a 21-yard passing touchdown in the fourth quarter to round out the Lions&8217; scoring. Gordon kicked the PAT through.

Homewood&8217;s only touchdown came on a 46-yard run long after this game was in the Lions&8217; win column.

While neither Homewood nor Briarwood kicked up much dirt on the ground, 58 for the Pats to 62 for the Lions, Briarwood struck for 166 yards through the air. Homewood could only manage 98 yards passing.

The win lifts the Lions to 4-1 overall. But Briarwood will be putting its 3-0 region record on the line when it travels to Talladega.

The upcoming region contest with Talladega has been moved up to 7 p.m. Thursday because of the race at Talladega.
