Dawgs face must-win following region loss

The Montevallo Bulldogs took it on the chin 49-19 at Montgomery Academy last Friday night and now find themselves in a must win situation to make the playoffs.

The Bulldogs will have to take care of business against region opponent Beulah despite the distractions of homecoming in Montevallo.

Bulldogs&8217; head football coach, Jim King, explained that it will take his team four wins to make the playoffs, and they now have two. The Dawgs are 4-2,2-2 in Class 3A.

A win over Beulah would give the Dawgs three wins with two region games left to get one more.

Against the Montgomery Academy Eagles, however, the Dawgs suffered with two blocked punts, two fumbles and one interception. King said, &8220;A football team is not going to beat anyone doing that.&8221;

The Eagles put up 438 yards total offense against the Dawgs, while Montevallo managed 334 yards total offense.

The Eagles jumped out to a 21 point lead over Montevallo in the first quarter, before the Dawgs&8217; Desmond Piper completed a 35-yard pass to Mason Parker in the second quarter.

Butin that same quarter,

the Eagles recovered a blocked Montevallo punt in the end zone and punched in a 1-yard run for a touchdown to lead 35-6 at the half.

Montevallo scored on a 21-yard Phillip Evans run in the third quarter and a 35-yard run by him in the fourth, but the Eagles added two touchdowns in the third quarter to keep the contest out of reach.

Montevallo&8217;s Piper was limited to two of eight passes for 33 yards and one interception.

Evans was the leading rusher for the Bulldogs with 228 yards on 29 carries.
