Homecoming heartbreaker for Jags

The Spain Park Jaguars are smarting after a heart-breaking 40-37 overtime loss to Homewood for homecoming.

This was a region encounter against a team upcoming region foe and cross county rival Oak Mountain had already beaten 21-0.

This was a chance for the Jaguars to get on the plus side of the record book among 6A teams this season.

Instead the Jaguars are 3-3, 1-3.

Despite leading 14-7 in the first quarter, the Patriots closed the gap to 23-21 at the half.

And just as it appeared Spain Park would be in the clear by scoring 14 unanswered points in the third quarter, Homewood hit for 16 unanswered points in the fourth. A 20-yard field goal in overtime by the Patriots spelled defeat.

This contest was just as close statistically as it was on the scoreboard. Homewood rushed for 128 to 106 for Spain Park. The Patriots passed for 341 to 283 for the Jaguars. The tale of the tape, 469 total yards of offense for Homewood and 389 for the Jaguars.

One big difference however was that Spain Park was penalized 10 for 110 yards to only 25 yards in penalties against the visitors.

Spain Park&8217;s Cody Wells completed 23 of 37 passes for 283 yards and four touchdowns.

Eli Smith rushed nine times for 50 yards and one touchdown while James Willis carried 12 times for 58 yards.

Brad Cox led the Jaguars defensively with six tackles and two interceptions, Jonathan Sullivan and Michael Layton each had four tackles and one fumble recovery.

The Jaguars will take a little trip to play Oak Mountain in a cross-county rivalry this Friday night.
