The IA Cornerstone Christian Chargers stepped up a class to take on 2A Meadowview Christian School this past Friday, coming away with a 28-22 win.

The win improved the Chargers to a 6-3 overall record and left head football coach Tim Smith excited.

&8220;I think it was probably the best first half of football we played all year,&8221; said Smith. &8220;We played about as well as we could play.&8221;

He said the offensive line was the key.

Behind that line, the Chargers rushed for 382 yards, and saw Avery Alexander return to old form, carrying the ball 29 times for 301 yards.

In just seven games of action this season, Alexander has broken the 1,000-yard barrier with 1,130 yards.

The Cornerstone defense was led by Josh Chriswell with 11 tackles and one sack.

Cornerstone struck first on a 7-yard Alexander run. Jake Horton, who completed four of eight passes for 46 yards, next connected with Blake Etress for a 25-yard touchdown strike and Kirk Robinson for a 5-yard pass to pay dirt.

Jesse Silvers closed out the scoring for Cornerstone with a 6-yard run.

Horton was good on all four PAT tries.

This Friday, the Chargers will finish out the regular season with a trip to 2A Kingwood.

Smith said of the upcoming contest, &8220;We&8217;ve got to find a way to stop (Andrew) Pearce and (Cody) Owens.&8221;

At present, Cornerstone is in a thee-way tie with their 5-3 region record and should make the IA, AISA playoffs.
