County teams vie for volleyball titles

Five Shelby County Schools are alive with a chance to win state volleyball titles.

This Thursday&8217;s sub-state tournament pairings include 3A Montevallo at Clarke County and Indian Springs School hosting Geneva.

Briarwood will host Eufaula in a 5A paring.

And in 6A, Pelham will host Clay-Chalkville while Thompson travels to Huntsville.

Kingwood Christian School is also participating this week in the East Area 1 Tournament hosted by Lee-Scott Academy.

To reach the sub-state tournament in Regional B finals action, Indian Springs defeated Leeds 22-25, 25-13, 25-22 and 25-21. In Regional B consolation action, Montevallo defeated Greensboro 25-22, 25-22, 15-25 and 25-19.

Briarwood defeated John Carroll 22-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-14 and 15-6 in Regional B finals action.

In Regional C finals action, Pelham defeated Hoover 25-16, 25-21 and 27-25. And in Regional C consolation, action Vestavia Hills defeated Thompson 25-14, 25-11 and 27-25.

Pelham finished first in the Regional C Tournament followed by Hoover, Vestavia and Thompson.

Leaders for Pelham were Whitney Billings with 31 kills, 11 blocks and 18 digs; Whitney Hudson with 25 kills, eight blocks and 20 digs; Shea McBee with 24 kills, 13 blocks and seven acres; Alison Young with 14 kills, 18 digs, six aces, and Liz Lee with 89 assists.

Pelham previously won the area 10 tournament with Thompson as runner up.

Briarwood won its area and regional tournament.

Briarwood was led in regional tournament play by Haley Johnson with 19 kills, two blocks, 17 digs and two aces; Leah Scoggins with 15 kills, five blocks, eight digs and four aces; and Stephanie McKinney with seven kills and six blocks.

Montevallo defeated Marbury to win its area tournament and defeated Sumter County before losing to Indian Springs in regional action.

However, a win over Greensboro allowed Montevallo to finish third in Region B Class 3A.

Candice Fields and Jordan Archer made the All-Region tournament team.
