The end of the Thompson Warriors&8217; regular season was bittersweet Friday night.
While the Thompson Warriors made it to the 6A playoffs, they came up short in the final game of the season.
A year removed from a dismal 3-7 record, the Warriors were hoping to win their final game of the 2006.
The Homewood Patriots had other ideas.
Homewood (5-5) edged Thompson (7-3) in the final quarter of the game, 17-10.
Headed in to Friday&8217;s match up with the Patriots, Thompson was in a three-way tie with Tuscaloosa County and Hueytown for the second and final playoff spot in Class 6A, Region 5.
A loss to Homewood left Thompson fans and players on edge after the game, as they waited for news on the outcome of the other two teams.
In the end, both Tuscaloosa and Hueytown lost, giving the Warriors the final spot in the postseason.
THS will travel to Florence (6-4) this Friday night for a first round match up.
The Warriors hurt themselves in Friday&8217;s loss to Homewood, losing 137 yards in penalties.
&8220;We just had too many penalties,&8221; Thompson head coach Brian Maner said. &8220;We can&8217;t expect to win when we aren&8217;t disciplined.&8221;
THS looked to establish its running game early on against the Patriots, but Homewood wouldn&8217;t have it.
Thompson finished the night with 58 yards rushing.
&8220;Homewood is just a great football team,&8221; Maner said. &8220;We knew they would be tough coming in to this game.&8221;
Warrior quarterback Alan Reeves finished the game with 157 passing yards, two interceptions and one touchdown.
Reeves connected with wide receiver Justin Carter on an 11-yard pass in the first quarter to give Thompson the 7-0 lead.
Homewood responded with a score of their own in the second period, but Thompson was able to regain the lead going into half up 10-7 with a 20-yard field goal.
The Patriots came out swinging in the second half, however, scoring a field goal in the third quarter and adding a touchdown in the final period to seal the win.
&8220;I thought we played hard tonight but we let mistakes get the better of us,&8221; Maner said.
