The Harpersville City Council fired police chief Paul Brasher at a meeting last Monday.
The council voted unanimously not to reappoint Brasher to another term as the town&8217;s top lawman.
&8220;We felt like we wanted to go in a new direction,&8221; said Mayor Theoangelo Perkins. &8220;However, we appreciate the chief&8217;s six years of service and his 15 years on the department.&8221;
The mayor explained that when the current city council came into office in 2004 they appointed the police chief to a one-year term.
However, last year motions to renew and end his contract both failed because of a lack of a second.
Perkins said under state law, public officials continue to serve until some action is taken.
Perkins said Brasher would stay with the department as a consultant until January and would continue to receive his salary, about $40,000 a year.
The mayor expects a new police chief to be hired sometime early next year.
In the meantime, Harpersville Police Officer Mike Waldrop will serve as interim chief.
Back in January, Harpersville also fired Fire Chief Philip Hamrick, who was replaced by Interim Chief Barry Adair until current Chief Wade Holley was appointed in August
