Spain Park splits in Over the Mountain Duals

The Spain Park Wrestling Team opened its season on Wednesday, Nov. 29 in the Over the Mountain Duals hosted by Mountain Brook High School and came away with a split with the Mountain Brook Spartans and the Oak Mountain Eagles.

The Over the Mountain Duals are the traditional kickoff to the wrestling season.

The Jaguars earned the split by defeating the Spartans 46 -30, and falling to the Eagles 54-15.

Outstanding wrestlers for the Jaguars were Wes Watkins (130 pounds), a junior with two pins, and Hunter Gaskins (140 pounds), a freshman also with two pins.

Following that action, the Jags traveled to Alexander City Friday and Saturday to participate in the Benjamin Russell Duals.

Friday night they opened with a loss to host Benjamin Russell 49-26.

They bounced back to defeat the Hoover B Team 48-21 and Auburn 42-31.

On Saturday Spain Park defeated Pelham 42-42 (win on criteria), Smith Station 36-31, and Bremen, Ga. 36-36 (win on criteria), before losing the last match to Hewitt-Trussville 52-24.

Outstanding and undefeated wrestlers for the Jags were Geoffrey Bostany (103) with three pins, one tech fall, one decision and two forfeits.

At 285, Eric Jones had five pins and two forfeits.

Also outstanding were Rob Riedler (6-1) (171) with six pins; John Alfano (5-2) (119) with three pins, one major decision and a forfeit; Bo Bishop (5-2) (152) with four pins and one tech fall; Hunter Gaskins (4-3) (140) with two pins and two decisions; Alex Shunnarah (4-3) (145) with one pin and three decisions; and Jon Michael Lord (4-3) (160) with one pin and three decisions.

The Jaguars will be in action Friday at the Pelham Tournament
